Belzona 5721

High performance & UV-stable coating for protection along the leading edge of wind turbine blades

Belzona 5721

Belzona 5721 is a 2-component, high-performance coating, specifically formulated for protecting the leading edge of wind turbine blades from erosion and impact damage.

This system is ideally suited for the rigorours of in-situ applications, being easy to apply by brush in a single coat. Together with its low-temperature cure technology, Belzona 5721 can maximise available maintenance opportunities and ensure the turbine’s fast return to service.

It is also safe to use due to being cold applied without the need for specialist tools or equipment. Furthermore, the Belzona solution is 100% solids, making it suitable for factory application.

Key Benefits:

  • Erosion protection against rain and debris, specifically designed for LEP
  • Outstanding adhesion to GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic)
  • Curing time is minimised to half an hour, even at temperatures as low as 5°C (41°F)
  • Excellent long-term protection against the effects of UV degradation
  • This 100% solids system is easy to mix and apply by brush, without the need for hot work

Applications for Belzona 5721:

  • Long term protection of the leading edge on wind turbine blades.
  • Erosion and corrosion protection on to similar types of equipment, including fan blades

How much does it cost to replace a blade on a wind turbine?

Replacing a wind turbine blade can cost on average $200,000 not including downtime. That’s why preventive maintenance and repair systems like Belzona’s leading edge protection solution can be a viable option.

What is the best coating for wind turbine blades?

An effective wind turbine blade coating should resist erosion from rain, UV, and airborne particles. Belzona 5721 is specifically designed for long-term protection of leading edges, helping to maintain aerodynamic performance and reduce maintenance costs. Testing in accordance with DNV-RP-0573 demonstrates that the Belzona LEP system (Belzona 5711 and Belzona 5721) provides excellent durability, fatigue resistance, and long-term adhesion when applied and tested under harsh environmental conditions.

The system maintains its erosion resistance even after prolonged weathering, making it an effective and reliable solution for the in-situ repair and protection of wind turbine blades.

Can you use Belzona for wind turbine maintenance?

Yes, Belzona can be used for wind turbine maintenance. Solutions such as Belzona 5711 and 5721are specifically designed for repairing and protecting wind turbine blades, especially at the leading edge, where erosion is most common. These fast-curing, high-performance solutions allow for on-site repairs, helping reduce downtime and extend blade lifespan.
